Chapter seventeen

Liz looked around the living room, smoldering anger burning within her. The walls seemed to close in on her, suffocating her with their presence. She was thinking about releasing her pent-up rage by smashing every piece of furniture into splinters when her PDD started vibrating.

With a sigh, she reached for the device, and Benedita’s face filled the screen a second later.

“You’re still pouting, I see.” Benedita teased, her eyes sparkling mischievously.

“Jim’s dead,” Liz growled, her voice dripping with resentment. “I’m so going to kill him when he comes back.”

Benedita threw her head back and laughed merrily, as she often did. “It’s been almost ten days. Let it go; he did that for your own safety after all, and you told me he apologized when you talked last night. Klatzo and I will come to pick you up. We’re taking Valkyrie for a spin. It will cheer you up.”

She cut the connection before Liz could say no.

Liz wished she could at least drink to calm herself down, but she couldn’t even do that because she’d just found out she was pregnant.

“Should I have told him about the baby last night?” she asked herself. She wanted to, but she was still mad, and their conversation had been very brief. It didn’t feel like the appropriate moment to share such joyous news. Moreover, it would distract Jim from his upcoming mission. No, she’d made the right choice, she decided. She’d tell Jim once he came back.

If he comes back.

Liz shuddered at the thought, feeling cold all of a sudden.

She figured that was the main reason behind her nervousness. Thoughts raced through her mind, each one more unsettling than the last. A looming question haunted her. What if Jim didn’t come back from his suicidal trip to the Crimson Universe, of all places? What if he got killed, never knowing that he’d have a baby? What if their child was destined to grow up without a father? The mere idea pierced her soul like a dagger as the weight of uncertainty pressed down on her, and a shiver ran through her body as she imagined a future without Jim.

She envisioned herself as a single mother, navigating the challenges of single parenting, with an emptiness that could never be filled. Her heart wrenched at the thought of her child growing up without Jim’s guidance, his presence, his love. How could she shield their little one from the inevitable questions, the void that would forever exist in their life?

I didn’t have to sit here worrying if the stupid bastard hadn’t pulled that stunt and left me here all alone!

She’d lost Jim once―the other Jim in her own universe, who later turned out to be alive. She suffered greatly back then, and it took her years (and meeting the new Jim) to recover. No, she couldn’t lose him all over again. The pain would’ve been too much to bear. Her heart would simply give out.

A glass of wine wouldn’t hurt the baby, especially so early, she decided.
